Flim Post

The Blind Side. Dir. John Lee Hancock. Perf. Quinton Aaron, Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw. Alcon Entertainment, 2009. DVD.
Summary:

This movie is about a boy who grew up in the "projects" and a family found him on the side of the road and took him in. The family adopted the boy, Michael Oher. He gets started in football at his new high school, Wingate, where he has a very successful career and every college wants him to come there. He ends up choosing the University of Mississippi and then was drafted by the Ravens in 2009.
Analysis:
This piece relates to my topic because Michael is a offensive tackle and they are the second most paid player in the NFL because they protect the quarterbacks “blind side”. They are paid so much because they prevent a lot of injuries of the quarterback and are very hard to find a guy with the perfect body shape. This is a credible source because it’s fairly recent and a true story.

Fiction "Pop"

Korman, Gordon. Pop. New York: Balzer & Bray, 2009. Print.
Summary:
A boy named Marcus moved from a small town where he was the quarterback, football star to a big town where the team was a close knit group and had a perfect season last year. Marcus met this man randomly at the park who turned out to be an NFL veteran know for good hits. This veteran named Charlie happened to be the quarterbacks dad in the new town. Marcus moved from quarterback to defense. Marcus learns that Charlie has alzhiemers disease from all of the hits he took in football and that's why his kids had to take such close care of him.
Analysis:
I thought this piece fit well with my topic, it was about injuries in sports. But this book talked about injuries that were recieved many years after the sport was played. So even if you are safe while playing the sport and never get injured there you may still end up with injuries, or in this case alzheimers when you grow old. Which is another reason why people need to take prevention of injuries seriously now, because if Charlie Popvich had alzhiemers imgaine what other athletes who are getting injured during the game could end up with.

Paragraph:
"Marcus exhaled sharply....witha fourteen-year career."

I found this passage suprising and interesting because it is about Marcus finding out the buddy he made down at the park was a professional football player. Any person finding out they have been hanging out with a professional athlete is pretty exciting. This passage also surprised me because Marcus didn't ever expect anything of his athletic ablitiy, he wanted to learn more about Charlie and why he was so important to the town because of how his kids treated him and kept such a close eye on him. This passgae lead to the rest of the book of Marcus finding out Charlie had Alzhiemers and understanding why the kids kept such a close eye on Charlie.

Reviews:
Most poeple on goodreads.com rated this book 3 stars, so an average book. They thought it was a good read but for the age level it was written for the children reading the book were being exposed to too much sexual content and alcoholic parties.

Barnes and Noble reviewers said it was a 5 star book. They enjoyed this book because it teaches a teenager how to get through problems, and there are unpredictable twist in the plot and you can never expect what is going to happen next. They said this book supports friendship, sports and bravery.

Non fiction Post

Edmonds, Molly. Discovery Health. Discovery. Web. 23 Apr. 2012.  http://health.howstuffworks.com/human-body/systems/nervous-system/teenage-brain1.htm.
I chose an article about the development of the teenage brain. It talks about how your brain isn't fully developed until you are twenty years old, with the prefrontal cortex taking longer to develop this causes the risky behaviors you do not see in adults.  Teenagers use the back of the brain for decision making whereas adults use the front of the brain, which causes adults to make decisions more quickly. The horomones in a teenage brain cause them to be very emotional and have risky behaviors.

I think this is a credible source. The article has an author and is from a big named magazine that deals with health. The article also relates to my topic because if you injure part of the brain it may slow development or stop the development from part of the brain completely, and in teenagers the development of the brain is very important. The article also has many sources from different news pieces.

Web Content #3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nVWRZuthcs

This Youtube Video talks about rehabilitiation and to prevent injuries. The hockey team was taught good ways to lift without getting hurt and improve body strength.

I think this is a credible source, it's from Mayo-Clinic and has a trainer talking in it. It is older, but it relates well to my topic of ways to prevent injuries.

Web Content #2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUitt_XQ2pQ&feature=related

159 concussions reported in the NFL in 2010. This article is about the effects concussions have on the body and symptoms of concussions. If not healed completely it is much easier to get another concussion or cause death.

I think this is a semi credible source. It relates well to my topic because it talks about how often concussions happen. But the author doesn't mention many sources. It is a fairly new article from last spring.

Web Content #1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LifIivSWkkc

This is about ways to prevent injuries in young people and a girl who tore her ACL playing lacrosse. Somethings you can do is stretch and build muscle strength.

I think this is a kind of credible source, it fits well with my topic of young people preventing injuires because it gives a few ways to prevent them but I feel as if I could find a better one with more options. There is no sources used in the web content. It is also a couple years old.

Summary: This article is about two high school athletes that got paralyzed from hits from behind in hockey, which are illegal. One of the kids Jenna might regain feeling in her legs but the other Jack will never unless he proves the testing wrong, which is unlikely. These hits were within a week of each other.
Analysis:  I think this is a credible source because it is written by a NHL contributor so he is around hockey a lot and it is his job to keep updated about hockey. And also the article was written shortly after the accidents happened. The only problem I see with the article is that no sources were identified.

Summary:  This article talks about the most common injuries in the knee. Most of which are ligament tears.  Knee injuries are 45 percent of all sport related injuries to high school kids.  Girls have a longer recovery time than boys with a knee related injury and are more likely to need surgery. Most of the knee injuries happen from illegal activity in the sporting event
Analysis:  I think this author is a little credible but I think there are better articles out there. The author is never stated and the article is fairly old. The purpose of this is to inform people which is needed but the only source they used is from Ohio State University College of Medicine.
